Definition & Core Technology
A High Compression-Resistant XPS Board is an advanced rigid foam insulation material manufactured through a continuous extrusion process. This process creates a homogeneous, closed-cell structure with exceptional density and mechanical strength, setting it apart from standard insulation foams.
Key Characteristics & Advantages
Superior Structural Strength: Its primary feature is an exceptionally high compressive strength (often ranging from 500 kPa to 1000+ kPa), enabling it to withstand heavy, sustained loads without deformation or performance loss.
Long-Term Performance: The closed-cell structure ensures minimal water absorption and vapor transmission, guaranteeing stable thermal resistance (R-value) and structural integrity over decades, even in below-grade applications.
Excellent Moisture Resistance: It is highly resistant to moisture, preventing rot, mold growth, and insulation failure in damp environments.
Lightweight & Easy to Handle: Despite its high strength, it remains lightweight, facilitating easy cutting, transportation, and installation.
Primary Applications
This material is the preferred choice for demanding projects requiring both insulation and structural support:
Roofing Systems: Used in protected membrane, inverted (IRMA), and green roof assemblies.
Flooring & Foundations: Ideal for insulating under-floor slabs, basement walls, and crawl spaces where ground pressure is significant.
Civil Engineering: Used in road and railway embankments, airport runways, and parking decks to prevent frost heave and provide stable insulation.
Specialized Flooring: Essential for insulating underlayment in cold storage floors, industrial facilities, and radiant floor heating systems.
In summary, High Compression-Resistant XPS Board is a premium, durable insulation solution engineered for critical applications where load-bearing capacity, moisture resistance, and long-term thermal performance are non-negotiable requirements.

FAQ-XPS
Q1:Can extruded polystyrene boards be recycled?
While XPS extruded insulation board is not widely recycled, some facilities accept it for recycling. However, it is best to check with local recycling centers for specific guidelines.
Q2:How do XPS boards compare to other insulation materials?
Compared to other insulation materials, XPS offers a higher R-value per inch, better moisture resistance, and is less prone to damage from pests or moisture compared to fiberglass or cellulose.
Q3:Can XPS extruded polystyrene boards be used in outdoor applications?
Yes, extruded polystyrene boards are suitable for outdoor applications, especially below grade or as part of a waterproofing system due to their resistance to moisture.
Where can I get material safety data sheets (SDS) for SOHO Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation Board products?
Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation Board products are globally defined as articles, which do not require Safety Data Sheets according to chemical laws in the following:
United States, Canada, European Union (EU) and other Europe/Middle East/African (EMEA) countries, Asia Pacific countries (including Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, etc.)
The XPS Board listed does not release or otherwise result in exposure to a hazardous chemical under the intended conditions of use and meet all other listed requirements of an article. Therefore, these products meet the global definitions of articles which do not require SDS creation or distribution.
Q4:Are SOHO rigid foam insulation considered to be Class A foams?
Section 803.1.2 of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) specifies Class A, Class B, and Class C requirements. Although insulation materials can be used as a finish material or as a material imbedded in the wall assembly, this classification scheme can be used to describe the basic classification of the fire properties of foam plastic insulation. Our rigid foam insulation boards belong to Class B.
